The Idyllwild area is located about 45 minutes ( depends on how fast you drive . . . ) from the Palm Springs area. There are several great trails that range from easy to very strenuous. Some trails require a free wilderness permit which can be obtained at the Ranger Station in Idyllwild. Be advised that if you plan to park at any trailheads you will need a National Forest Adventure Pass. You can purchase the pass in Palm Desert at the Big 5 Sporting Goods store. There is a daily pass which will cost you $5, or you can buy a yearly pass for $30. When purchasing the yearly pass you can also purchase a Secondary Vehicle pass for an additional $5, which is worth it if you are going with several people in two vehicles.
